Abstract

|
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop a theory about the survival process of sexually abused children.
Methods: This study used a grounded theory methodology to explore the processes by which children escape sexual abuse. The subjects of this study were six victims of sexual abuse, 11 to 14 years old, who were living in a shelter.
Results: The data revealed 124 concepts, which were classified into 26 subcategories and 14 superordinate categories. The participants were classified into three types: the scar-embracing type, the time-dependence type, and the hide-and-let-it-be type.
Conclusions: The findings of the study lend support to using strength-based practical methods with children who have been victims of sexual abuse.
